How to look up towing capacity by VIN

  1. Find your VIN. It's the 17-character code on your driver's-side door-jamb sticker, the lower corner of the windshield, your registration, or your insurance card. It has no letters I, O, or Q (to avoid confusion with 1 and 0).
  2. Type it into the VIN box above and hit Decode. We send it to the free public NHTSA vPIC database, which returns your year, make, model, body class, and GVWR. Nothing is stored, and nothing goes to a dealer.
  3. We match the decoded vehicle to OEM tow-guide data. NHTSA doesn't publish tow capacity itself (it's OEM spec data, not regulatory), so we cross-reference the decoded year/make/model against our dataset of 40 popular trucks and SUVs to pull GCWR, curb weight, and OEM max-tow. If your exact configuration isn't matched, switch to the Manual tab and type the GCWR/GVWR/curb numbers straight off your door-jamb sticker.
  4. Enter your real load. Passengers (total body weight, not just the driver), cargo (anything in the bed, back seat, or trunk), and hitch hardware (50–100 lb for a receiver, ball mount, and weight-distribution bars). The OEM max-tow number assumes a 150 lb driver and nothing else.

Why this VIN lookup is different from the others

Search "towing capacity by VIN" and page one is three kinds of dead end: an OEM tool that only works for one brand, an RV-dealer calculator that takes your VIN and funnels you into their trailer inventory, or a blog post that explains the math but makes you do it yourself. RAM even quietly removed its VIN tool, which is why truck forums are full of people asking where it went. Here's what we did instead:

How VIN-based towing capacity actually works

There's a common myth that the VIN itself "contains" your tow rating. It doesn't. A VIN encodes the vehicle's identity — year, make, model, body style, plant, engine family — and regulators (NHTSA) publish some safety ratings like GVWR against it. But tow capacity is manufacturer spec data, not regulatory data, so it isn't in any VIN database. The way every legitimate "VIN lookup" works — including Ford's — is: decode the VIN to identify the exact vehicle, then look that vehicle up in the OEM tow guide. That's exactly the two-step this tool automates.

Step 1 — decode the VIN (NHTSA vPIC)

The free public NHTSA vPIC API returns year, make, model, body class, drive type, engine, and GVWR from the 17-character VIN. That's enough to pin down which OEM tow-guide row applies.

Step 2 — pull the OEM tow specs and run the budget

Once the vehicle is identified, the math is two layered weight budgets constrained by two OEM-published ceilings:

Available Tow = GCWR − Curb − Passengers − Cargo − Hitch hardware

…capped at the OEM-published Max Tow rating. If the headroom from GCWR is lower than Max Tow, you're load-limited and headroom wins; if Max Tow is lower, you're chassis-limited and Max Tow wins.

Available Payload = GVWR − Curb − Passengers − Cargo − Tongue weight

Tongue weight = Trailer GVW × tongue% — 10–15% for travel and utility trailers, 15–25% for fifth-wheel pin weight, 5–10% for boats. Tongue weight pushes down on the hitch and counts against the truck's payload, which is the line most people miss: a 7,500 lb trailer at 12% tongue puts 900 lb on the hitch, subtracted straight from what else the truck can legally carry.

The 80% safe-tow rule

Kelley Blue Book, AAA, and the RV Industry Association all recommend keeping your loaded trailer at or below 80% of the OEM max-tow rating. The 20% margin absorbs hills, headwinds, panic braking, hot transmission fluid, and cargo creep. Above 80% you're still legal; above 100% you're overloading the powertrain, brakes, and frame the truck was engineered for.

Ford towing capacity by VIN — 2024 F-150 SuperCrew 3.5L EcoBoost

Decode a Max-Tow F-150 VIN and you'll match GCWR 17,800 · Curb 5,014 · OEM Max Tow 13,500. With a 165 lb driver and 75 lb of hitch hardware, available tow is 12,546 lb and the 80% safe-tow line is 10,800 lb. A 9,000 lb travel trailer at 12% tongue (1,080 lb) still leaves roughly 890 lb of payload — the everyday half-ton + 30-foot travel trailer combo, comfortably green. Ford's own VIN tool gives you this too, but only for Fords.

RAM towing capacity by VIN — 2024 RAM 1500 5.7L Hemi, 3.92 axle

RAM pulled its public VIN tool, which is why the r/ram_trucks threads keep asking for one. Decode a 1500 Hemi VIN here and you'll match GCWR 17,000 · Curb 5,232 · OEM Max Tow 11,540 → 11,528 lb available with a driver and hitch, 9,232 lb at the 80% line. A 7,500 lb boat trailer at 7% tongue (~525 lb) sits at 65% of max — plenty of margin for a long highway pull.

Chevy / GMC towing capacity by VIN — 2024 Silverado & Sierra 1500

Chevrolet and GMC share the same 1500 platform and the same VIN-decode path. A 5.3L Silverado 1500 typically lands around GCWR 15,000 · OEM Max Tow ~9,300 depending on axle and trailering package — firmly in the "full-size tow rig" class. The decode tells you the year/make/model; the trim and axle ratio on your door-jamb sticker fine-tune the exact number, which is why we show the source and let you drop to Manual for an option-package match.

Toyota towing capacity by VIN — 2024 Tacoma vs Tundra

The mid-size trap: a 2024 Tacoma V6 decodes to GCWR 10,475 · Curb 4,495 · OEM Max Tow 6,500, but with two adults (330 lb) and hitch, available tow drops to 5,575 lb and the 80% line is 5,200 lb — a 5,500 lb trailer is already amber. A full-size Tundra decodes far higher. Same brand, very different rigs, which is exactly why a VIN-specific lookup beats a generic "Toyota can tow X" claim.

Yes, but indirectly — and it's worth understanding why. Why doesn't my exact trim show the right number?

Tow capacity varies by engine, axle ratio, cab configuration, and trailering package — details the VIN decode can narrow but not always pin to the pound. If the decoded match looks off, read the GCWR, GVWR, and curb weight straight off your door-jamb sticker and enter them on the Manual tab; those numbers are vehicle-specific and override any dataset average.

Where is my VIN, and what if I don't have the truck with me?

The 17-character VIN is on the driver's door-jamb sticker, the lower driver's-side corner of the windshield, your vehicle registration, and your insurance card. So you can look up towing capacity by VIN from the registration in your glovebox or a photo on your phone — you don't need to be standing at the truck.

What's the difference between GVWR and GCWR on my VIN sticker?

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the most the truck alone can weigh, loaded — curb + passengers + cargo + tongue weight. GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) is the most the truck and trailer can weigh together. Available tow is driven by GCWR; available payload is driven by GVWR. A correctly loaded rig stays under both at once — this tool checks both for you.

Once the VIN tells you what your truck can pull, four categories cover almost every ready-to-tow build — and each one factors into the payload math above:

  • Best Tonneau Covers — a hard or soft bed cover secures gear and cuts drag on long tow trips. Hard covers run 50–80 lb; enter that in the Cargo field so the calculator subtracts it from both tow and payload.
